Minds and Societies

During the first Summer Institute in Cognitive Science held at UQAM, more than 150 participants from Canada and around the world were brought together to discuss the topic of categorization. Inspired by this success, and in line with its teaching and research objectives, the Cognitive Science Institute will be holding its second Summer Institute from June 28th to July 8th, 2008. The topic will be social cognition, to be understood in its psychological and community aspects. It will bring together at UQAM researchers with international recognition. The Institute aims at learning and sharing ideas as well as promoting networking for future research and cooperation. Located in the heart of Montreal, the Summer Institute venue provides a multicultural context rich with its old world charm, in a thoroughly modern setting.

European Conference on Artificial Intelligence 2008

ECAI, the biennial European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, is the leading conference in its field in Europe. ECAI-08, the 18th conference in this series, is jointly organized by the European Coordinating Committee on Artificial Intelligence the University of Patras and the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society. ECAI-08 will give researchers from all over the world the possibility to identify important new trends and challenges in all subfields of Artificial Intelligence, and it will provide a major forum for potential users of innovative AI techniques.

20th european summer school in logic, language and information

The European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI) is organized every year by the Association for Logic, Language and Information (FoLLI) in different sites around Europe.

The main focus of ESSLLI is on the interface between linguistics, logic and computation. ESSLLI offers foundational, introductory and advanced courses, as well as workshops, covering a wide variety of topics within the three areas of interest: Language and Computation, Language and Logic, and Logic and Computation.

Previous summer schools have been highly successful, attracting up to 500 students from Europe and elsewhere. The school has developed into an important meeting place and forum for discussion for students and researchers interested in the interdisciplinary study of Logic, Language and Information.

Europäisches Forum Alpbach: Seminarwoche

„Wahrnehmung und Entscheidung" lautet das Generalthema des 64. Europäischen Forums Alpbach. Vom 14. bis 30. August 2008 soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, wie Wahrnehmung und Interpretation zu Diagnosen und schließlich zu Prognosen führen, die unsere Entscheidungen beeinflussen. In der Tradition des Europäischen Forums Alpbach wird das Generalthema in einer Vielfalt wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen, unter Berücksichtigung unterschiedlicher Ansätze und Standpunkte, diskutiert.

ICCL Summer School 2008

The summer academy will focus on the long-lasting controversy of the
relationship between modern formal logic (including its use for
automated reasoning and computation) and, on the other hand, the
rationality and common sense underlying human reasoning.
Traditionally, a huge gap is perceived between the symbolic
representation of knowledge used in modern logic and the
sub-symbolic representation considered dominant in human reasoning.
Psychological experiments of the past even suggested that people
often don’t reason logically and, in general, that logic seems to
play only a minor role in human reasoning. However, recently, new
ways of explaining human reasoning seem to revive its relatedness to
logic. For this reason this summer academy attempts to bring
together researchers from both sides for an exchange of views.
